Social Responsibility Of International Press

Hello you!

I was recently talking to a dear friend regarding how people are often scared to visit certain countries because of the “bad press” that is wired all over the world on a daily basis; or should I say “wrong press”? Bad, wrong, biased, inaccurate, erroneous, inexact, misleading, the adjective it’s up to you. Now, I am not saying to ignore “real” threats to your own integrity, but let’s not exaggerate.

Risks are always present. Every day, every single second something can happen to any of us. There are obviously different degrees of risk depending on the current situation of a certain zone/country. There is also every person’s threshold, their own limit to a risk they are willing to undergo. I am not concerned with that at all. I am concerned, though, with the way government agencies rank countries and advice co-nationals against visiting certain nations because they are too “risky”.

Colombia, my country, is one of those places that are considered “extremely dangerous”. The US state department and other developed countries issue travel warnings on a monthly basis just to remind their citizens not to visit Colombia, placing fear on top of their minds every time a trip there is suggested. It is unfortunate that Colombia is nowadays a synonym of drugs, kidnapping and violence. It is disappointing that “Oh, have you got some cocaine?” are the first words I repeatedly hear when a foreigner asks me where I come from. Not to blame them though, that is what press have fed them in the last couple of decades.

All of this “bad press” has adverse repercussions in every strata of our society. About six years ago, I had the opportunity of travelling to Sweden as an exchange student together with other 200 students from all over the world. The main objective of these exchange programs is to increase cultural-awareness both for the foreign student and the host university. Before leaving, at a short preparation seminar, we were rightly instructed that we were then ambassadors of our culture, and we had to show the good facet of Colombia and its people. I happily assumed this role and worked hard on patiently try to change the image my country had in the minds of most of the other exchange students and locals. One year later, this program excluded Colombia as one of their destinations because a travel warning was issued by the US State Dpt. How many foreigners lost the great chance of coming here and explore the real Colombia? How many young Colombian students lost their chance of going abroad to become an ambassador of our culture and keep on changing a wrong image? Wouldn’t this kind of programs increase cultural awareness all over the world? Is it by alienating a country how you make it a better place to live? It is immeasurable the damage this decision might have caused to our generation.

Fortunately, there are some organisations that understand that the only way not to be afraid of each other is to get to know each other. AIESEC (www.aiesec.org) is the world’s largest student-run organisation. Their main objective: increase world co-operation through cultural understanding; and how do they do it? Exchange people all over the world, making them see different realities. During my years working with them and enjoying the organisation, it certainly changed the way I see many of the problems that currently affect our society. It gave me an insight on how my people behave when abroad; and how foreigners behave when they visit us. I could see how hundreds of frightened young professional came to work in Colombia for a year and enjoyed it so much that they ended up staying longer, settling here, and even starting their own families here. These people will obviously come back to their own countries and talk wonders of Colombia, and probably people would say “WHAT? Are you out of your mind?”. However, they would be as seeds that germinate to become the good word for an “extremely dangerous” country, and not only will they become Colombian ambassadors as well, but a socially aware individual. Someone who is able to understand that press is not always right, that appearance seldom concords with reality. AIESEC “shakes up” the way young people see the world. And it succeeds quite easily.

Press is always searching for “shocking” news, raw bits of reality carefully handled to shock the most vulnerable part of ourselves. It is obvious that the human kind has the ability to adapt to most of the situations he is subjected. Hence, we have become accustomed to violence in our daily lives. We now rarely shock because of death, hunger, inequality. The farther it is from our small social sphere, the less we care. Press thus adapt to the new state of humanity and search for other dreadful ways to shock our perception of the world. You can now see the vicious circle. Where will this lead humanity? Why are we so appealed by other’s sufferance and pain?

How nice it would be that we were “shocked” or “shaken up” in the way AIESEC does, instead of having a bunch of “pain predators” feeding us with the world most outrageous sufferance. How good it would be that we all got accurate information of what is really dangerous and what not. How pleasant it would be that many of us had the chance to see different realities in order to become tolerant and real citizens of the world.

Have a good life!

Cheers!

Found it! Real First!

Hello you!

At first I opened up this space kind of as a diary where to write my thoughts and describe what I have been living in these last intense months/years of my life. Then I soon found out that there is no point in writing about my personal life in the most impersonal media of all: the internet.

And by all means, I am not trying to have a go at internet!!! In many ways it has helped to make this world a bit more "liveable" by bringing people and cultures together! Including me considering that a good 75% of my ex’s and about 80% of my friends are from a different culture. I just believe its full potential is wasted and misused often. Anyhow, that it's not the main point of this introduction to my blog! Keep focused!

So today, while walking to the only place you pay to submit to a self-indulged sufferance - the gym -, I decided I will get some use out of this megabytes of hard drive space offered "for free" by one of the biggest corporate machines in the world (not to ignore that they do make money out of this "free" service, and that money will end up in rich pockets, rather that in the people that really need it). I never understood though, why offer free space for blogs for people that can pay for it? At least a tiny contribution to MAKE POVERTY HISTORY! People that cannot pay for a blog, obviously, wouldn’t be bothered to check emails, or surf the net, as they are more worried about finding something to feed their children and themselves!

Note: BTW and FYI, the term "surf the net" was first coined by US writer Jean Armour Polly in 1992 - the same year the number of internet sites hit a million. She said "surfing" referred to the feeling she got jumping from one web page to another- it was like leaping from wave to wave.... Metro factfile, May 18th 2005. See what you can learn reading a "free" factless newspaper!

So yeah! I refuse to use this space to express my feelings and let nosy people read about my life because it is something useless for them and for me. It is a waste of time, electricity and corporate money for other people and I! Nothing valuable will come out of it and I do not want by any means to waste time that people could actually be using in other "socially aware" activities.

Besides, I am sure that no one in their senses will be interested in reading about my personal life without even knowing me. I would think only friends, close ones, would care about it. And that's why more personal ways like face-to-face conversations, or at least a telephone call can be used. Besides, I am really not interested in shooting out questions as "what's the meaning of life", what's love or any other philosophical matter for me to read peoples own personal answers that they actually take as general and not specific. If I were interested in answers to my problems, I may as well get hands on them to solve them or go to a therapist, not wait for some "virtual fortune teller" to answer all my questions and show me the path to "happiness".

And if someone would in deed be interested in reading about a stranger’s life then that person is definitely walking towards social alienation, and I don’t want to be involved in the fact that most of the American and European youth spend a big chunk of their times in front of a computer.

I will be honest, though!! I do represent the vast majority of today's youth: capitalist, health-oriented, technology dependant. BUT I INTEND TO CHANGE THAT! And in future posts, YOU and I will learn how and when to do it! It is no less important the WHEN! And I suspect it would be A.S.A.P.!

As a general ground when reading my blog, you could use the following:

  • You would have noticed that I "meto entre comillas" many words, that is because I believe these words are very subjective and quite personal concepts that I do not wish to generalise.
  • I also thought about what language to use while writing the blog. Spanish, easy to use being my native tongue. Italian, too restrictive towards how many people would be able to actually read what I want to say. English it is, part because it's the last remaining language I actually dominate, and… what tha heck! Let’s give Uncle Sam a chance and use the language he imposed in the planet Earth through his economic power and army arsenal. Who dares to deny it? And will also try to give a bit of a British touch, just to introduce the place where I’m currently living. Not for long though.

I do not intend for you to adopt my ways of thinking, even less I’d like you to agree with me. That is not my intention at all. But I would be grateful if you drop your thoughts down there in the box set for comments. Do not waste to much time though! Do it only if it is completely necessary.

Have a good life!

Cheers!
